Day 2 of INBOUND 2015 in Boston started off with an incredible keynote by Brene Brown. It was, no doubt, one of the most highly anticipated sessions for the day, given the number of people who arrived early to claim the best seats in the house.

When Brene Brown took the stage, she talked about fear, shame, vulnerability and love. All the things that would not normally be talked about at a marketing conference but the very things that make us human. These are the few emotions that guide us in everything that we decide to do. You realize she is absolutely right when she says:
“We think we are cognitive beings who occasionally feel. We are not. We are feeling beings who on occasion think.” – Brene Brown #INBOUND15

She went on to talk about courage and living a brave life. There was no sugarcoating when she said that being brave meant we will definitely fail a few times. We will get our ass kicked.
She emphasized that being brave is not easy or comfortable. But despite all of this, if we want to innovate, we have no choice but to be brave. We have to let ourselves be vulnerable before we can succeed. And once again, showing vulnerability is difficult when we have always been told to suppress such a show of our weakness.
Next up she talked about shame and the current economy that thrives on it. She made us realize that we are not the only ones with fears and insecurities, and that knowledge is empowering. We understood that it is possible to overcome these, and how we do that is what defines us best. We were no longer scared of criticism when she said that the critic doesn’t matter. What is important is that we chose to go out get things done.

And finally, she stressed the fact that all humans are made up of these very strong emotions and if we wish to influence their behavior, our best bet is to appeal to those emotions.
